Schools in Nigeria's northern region have become frequent targets for armed groups

Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.

The armed faction breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.

The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their hostel, according to a statement.

A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.

Community members informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.

The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.

In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have increasingly been targeted for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The assault in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.

Security crisis in Nigeria's northern territories has worsened considerably in recent months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the unrest.
