Ahead of marking his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his continued role with the club is inextricably linked to winning major honors.

The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era

Arteta was appointed on the 20th of December in 2019 and promptly led the team to an cup win within months. Yet, that first major trophy stands as his sole major honor following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” Arteta responded in response to a query about his future past 2027. “However, it is about today. And a lot of things must occur in the near future as well to warrant that continuation.”

Saturday night brings the anniversary with a fixture against Everton, the identical team Arsenal faced the day after his appointment was announced.

The Current Landscape

He stated further, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from the board and owners, yet identifying the players' commitment as paramount. “At the end, the key individuals are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, willingness to improve and give the maximum to the team.”

The team approaches the upcoming game managing yet another injury. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a strain that is likely to sideline him for the coming weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Regardless of the availability issues and the immense scrutiny, Arteta is confident the club's “objectives and communication” are profoundly distinct from when he first arrived.

The manager referenced the team's performances as evidence of progress. “Consider the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the caliber we've reached.”

Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our aim is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
