The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Love Story
In this animated adventure for preteens, the world of fairies is dedicated to collecting teeth from sleeping youngsters and leaving treasure under their pillows. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who provide metal in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous gnome he had imagined.
A Forbidden Connection and Common Enemy
Everything is prepared for an adventure with a light sprinkling of young love (though it’s very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from one another, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings as one. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the other. The fairies are said to be entitled types, prone to stealing anything they want, while goblins are reportedly stupid, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are actually bright and technologically advanced.
Of course, this scenario requires a common enemy to unite against, and this is duly provided by a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, though not especially competent, villains.
Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression
There aren’t very many children’s animations targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have early romances, but are not old enough for the content 14-year-olds view these days instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to become their new favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.
A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
