Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
